A terpolymer is obtained by copolymerizing a major proportion of 4-methylpentene-1 with a minor proportion of 3-methylpentene-1 and a minor proportion of a normal alpha olefin in the presence of (a) a solid crystalline compound of a metal of Groups IV to VIII of the Mendeleef Periodic Table; and (b) an organometallic compound of a metal of Groups I to III. In the example, 4 - methylpentene - 1 and 3 - methylpentene-1 were mixed in n-heptane, and a titanium trichloride-aluminium diethyl monochloride catalyst prepared in n-heptane. The catalyst was added to the monomer mixture and a continuous feed of the 3- and 4-methylpentenes together with hexene-1 was also introduced. A H2/N2 molecular weight control gas mixture was also passed through the mixture. The catalyst was deactivated at the end of the polymerization with a methanol/acetylacetone mixture and the crystalline terpolymer recovered.
