PURPOSE: A method for preparing a polymer polyol using an acid catalyst, a coating composition containing the polymer polyol prepared by the method, a polymer polyol and a polyol composition containing the polymer polyol are provided, to prepare the polymer polyol derived from an epoxy resin, which is useful to prepare a coating composition whose content of bisphenol A and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A is very low. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the step of copolymerizing water and a multifunctional epoxide resin in the presence of an acid catalyst, wherein the amount of water is enough to avoid the gelation and the copolymerization is non-dispersive process. The copolymerization is carried out in the presence of a solvent practically dissolving both the epoxide resin and water, and preferably the solvent is a mixture of water and ether. The coating composition comprises the polymer polyol prepared by the method; and a hydroxyl group-reactive crosslinking agent. The polymer polyol contains a glycol terminal group, two glycidyl units and a repeating unit containing primary and/or secondary alcohols. Preferably the polymer polyol is represented by the formula 3, wherein X is an organic crosslinking group derived from diglycidyl ether; R is H or a radical represented by the formula 3-1 or 3-2 (wherein R' is R or H; and m, n, p, q, r, s, t, u and v is 0 to about 50, m+n+p>=1).
