An enclosed power clamp (10) operable by a fluid powered cylinder (12) includes a housing (16) made up of a plurality of planar plates (100,102,104,106,108) stacked and secured together by dowels (90) and threaded fasteners (94) to form an integral unit. The internal mechanisms of the power clamp are contained, within the housing (16), in hollow spaces defined by appropriately shaped apertures in the plates (100,102,104,106,108). These mechanisms co-operate with a shaft (44) mounted in the housing (16) and connected to a clamp arm (17). The mechanisms convert linear motion of the cylinder (12) to rotary motion of the clamp arm (17). Compared to conventional cast iron or aluminium housings, the use of a stack of planar plates (100,102,104,106,108) provides an inexpensive and lightweight structure. <IMAGE> |
