PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimally control the valve timing by accurately determining an oil temperature condition of exhibiting a response speed required from operability from a water temperature and an intake air temperature by a hydraulically driving variable valve timing mechanism. SOLUTION: When each of a starting time water temperature TWs and a starting time intake air temperature TINTs is an operation guaranteeing oil temperature Th or more, and an absolute value of a deviation of each is a prescribed valueΔT or less, it is estimated that an oil temperature is the operation guaranteeing temperature Th or more, and operation of the variable valve timing mechanism is permitted after the water temperature TW rises to a first operation permitting water temperature TW1 for permitting an increase in an internal EGR quantity by an increase in an overlap quantity. While, when the starting time temperature condition is not realized, the operation of the variable valve timing mechanism is permitted after water temperature TW rises to a second operation permitting water temperature TW2 at which the oil temperature surely becomes the operation guaranteeing oil temperature Th or more.
