PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sliding member having a sliding contact layer with high hardness (Hv=1000 or higher) and high peeling strength. SOLUTION: This method for manufacturing the sliding member comprises transporting aerosol in which fine particles of a brittle material such as aluminum oxide are dispersed in gas, colliding them with a base material at high speed, generating fine broken fragments from the primary particles of the brittle material, and bonding the fine broken fragments to the base material, or bonding the fine broken fragments each other, to form the sliding contact layer having Vickers hardness Hv=1000 or higher or Hv=1400 or higher without baking it, which consists of a dense brittle material.
