PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for reading images, that has both of the stable image read function which has been difficult to achieve by manual image readers and the function of reading an original whose size is greater than the main body size that has been impossible by a stationary image reader. SOLUTION: The method and device for reading image is such, that while the image reader body provided with an image sensor 2 reading an image of an original by scanning a predetermined area in the subscanning direction is placed on the image of the original; the image sensor 2 is driven to read one area of the image of the original, the body is moved to the other areas of the original image after reading; the image sensor is used to read the other area; a position calculation means 11 calculates the present position on the basis of the information from a detection means 7 detecting a motion, when the body is moved and an image compositing means 10 which composites the read images which depend on the position information.
