RADIAL ELECTRIC MOTOR AND CONTROL THEREOF

An electric motor is disclosed having a number of radially oriented solenoids. Each of the solenoids has a plunger and the plungers are mounted relative to each other and relative to an output shaft. A control methodology is disclosed for energising the solenoids to rotate the output shaft and meet required performance characteristics such as required torque and speed of rotation. The motor is capable of providing high torque at relatively low rotational speeds. It also has relatively small axial dimension, so it is particularly suited for electric vehicle applications.
