A beacon comprises means to be secured to the animal, radio transmitting means, and an antenna. A search console (200) comprises an antenna system (202), with at least two antennae, means (214, 216, 218) for receiving signals picked up by the antennae, and indicating means, for supplying a guiding information. The beacon comprises an encoder capable of generating a single code identifying the animal and of modulating the radio signal produced by said transmitting means. The console antenna system (202) comprises at least three antennae, with one omnidirectional antenna (208) and at least two directional antennae (204, 206) whereof the greater gain directions are oriented in different directions. Code identifying means (220) extract, in the signals delivered by each of the receiving means associated with the antennae, a specific signal modulated by the code of the animal to be located, and the guide indicating means compare the relative levels of the specific signals simultaneously received by each of the antennae.
