PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for separating and producing a leaf sheath fiber usable as a raw material for pulp from a herbaceous plant in high yield by treating the plant with microorganism in water. SOLUTION: A herbaceous plant containing leaf sheath fibers is reaped and treated with microorganism in water. During the period from the reaping to the microbial treatment of the plant, the water content of the herbaceous plant is maintained to a level higher than a specific level, concretely >=10 wt.%, more preferably 20-50 wt.% or over.
