PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To record gradations by changing the number of ink drops to be discharged for forming one pixel in accordance with image density information, thereby changing a size of the pixel, and carry out high-image quality and high-gradation recording. SOLUTION: An ink jet head 23 has liquid chambers for storing ink, ink discharge openings communicating via liquid channels with the liquid chambers, and heaters arranged in the liquid channels. A pulse signal is inputted to the heater to generate bubbles to the ink in the liquid channel, and at the same time an ink drop 24 is discharged from the ink discharge opening by a working force caused by swelling of the bubbles. An energy of one pulse signal inputted to the heater is set to be 'E=0.6×10<-6> to 14.8×10<-6> (J)', an opening area of the ink discharge opening is set to be 'S=2×10<-6> to 5×10<-6> (cm<2> )', and an 'E/S' value is made 0.3-3.
