PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound useful as a functional material, to provide a method for producing the same and to obtain an organic EL element using the compound. SOLUTION: This nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound can emit light or change color by light photoirradiation or the action of electric field and is represented by formula (I) (X<1> and X<2> are each an electron attractive group such as a cyano group or the like; rings Z<1> and Z<2> are each a hydrocarbon ring or a heterocycle (a benzene ring containing an electron donative group such as a hydroxy group, an alkoxy group, an amino group, an N-substituted amino group or the like or a condensed ring between a heterocycle containing a nitrogen atom as a hetero atom and a benzene ring). This organic EL element can be obtained by laying an organic layer containing the compound between a pair of electrodes.
