PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an impact absorbing type steering device capable of easily decreasing a peak load acting on a driver in an early stage of impact absorbing due to collision with a steering wheel, with a simple structure. SOLUTION: A shaft 51 is provided, which is inserted in a shaft insertion hole 42 of a column side member 22 relatively moving to a vehicular body by impact and moves together with a vehicular body side member prevented from relatively moving to the vehicular body. The short diameter of an impact absorbing range 42a of the shaft insertion hole 42 is less than the maximum outer diameter of the shaft 51 in a direction orthogonal to the relative moving direction. The shaft 51 expands the impact absorbing range 42a by pushing, and the column side member 22 is plastically deformed, thereby absorbing impact. A center position P in a short diameter direction of the impact absorbing range 42a at a border B between the impact absorbing range 42a and a shaft waiting range 42b is positioned in a rear side of an acting direction of moment M acting on the column member 22 at the time of collision, from a center position Q in the maximum diameter portion of the shaft 51 in a state contacting with the border B. |
