PURPOSE: To enable an on-vehicle navigation device to display easily understandable map pictures. CONSTITUTION: A map picture plotting section 12 reads out map data of a scale designated from a user including the present location of its own vehicle to a buffer memory 11 from a CDROM 1 based on the present location and azimuth of the vehicle detected by means of a GPS receiver 2. A discriminating section 15 discriminates whether the vehicle is in a stopping state or running state based on the speed of the vehicle. When the vehicle is in the stopping state, the section 12 plots a map picture in a video RAM 13, with the present location of the vehicle being set to the center and advancing direction of the vehicle being oriented upward, by using the map data of the scale designated from the user and, when the vehicle is in the running state, the section 12 plots a twiceenlarged map picture containing no vehicle location mark in the RAM 13, with the location of the vehicle at the center of the lower edge and advancing direction being oriented upward, by using the map data of the scale designated from the user. A video converting section 14 reads out the picture in the RAM 13, converts the picture into prescribed video signals, and outputs the video signals to a display device 4 and the device 4 displays the picture. |
