PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the accuracy of focus detection by controlling the outputs of respective photoelectric conversion regions of the same pixels in such a manner that these outputs are made nearly equal to each other even when the quantities of the incident light on the respective photoelectric conversion regions vary. SOLUTION: The image pickup device for making the photoelectric conversion of the incident optical images through a photographic lens 5 has the plural pixels having the tow photoelectric conversion regionsαandβwithin each pixel. The device is so constituted that the photoelectric conversion regions on the side nearer the optical axis of the imaging lens among the photoelectric conversion regions within the plural pixels and the photoelectric conversion regions on the side more distant from the optical axis can be respectively independently controlled.
