A mechanical seal comprises a sealing element 3 constituted by a graphite or metal fabric impregnated with P.T.F.E. and is in direct intimate contact at its periphery with a metal casing 6 in order to dissipate the heat of friction. The space defined by a metal bellows 4, the sealing element, a metal distance-piece 7 and a washer 5 contains a fluid pressure and is either hermetically sealed or connected to a fluidpressure source.
