A filter system comprises, in series, a high pressure pump 48 followed by a large diameter (>76mm) coreless filter element in a high pressure housing 10 and then a reverse osmosis or nanofiltration filter 49 in a high pressure vessel. The high pressure is preferably in excess of 650 kPa and both the housing and the vessel are preferably made of resin reinforced glass fibres. The pre-filter 10 may be a hollow cylinder formed of resin bonded glass fibres, polypropylene or non-bonded, non-woven, synthetic, polymeric microfibres. The filter system may be used as a desalination apparatus to produce drinking water. The pre-filter may comprise a sub-assembly, within the housing 10, including a filter element 54 having opposing end faces each of which engages a respective end member 14a, 14b the sub-assembly being located between two mountings 13a, 13b which are fixed relative to the housing 10. The mountings 13a, 13b may provide a passage for fluid to and from the filter element 54. |
