PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a capping mechanism having means for communicating with the atmosphere while suppressing evaporation, in which a passage communicating with the atmosphere can be prevented from clogging even if ink drips into a cap, and moisture retaining performance is enhanced in the cap under capped state. SOLUTION: The ink jet recorder comprises an opening 58 through which the inside of a cap 19 communicates with the atmosphere, a part 43 covering the opening 58 through a space region 50, and an opening 49 interconnecting the space region and the inside of the cap along the inner bottom face of the cap. The opening 58 is located at a position deviated from the region of an discharge opening 82 projected onto the cap at the time of capping and the opening 49 is opened in the direction receding from the region of the discharge opening projected onto the cap at the time of capping.
