A full cord starter for use with an engine having fan blades 14 connected to the engine shaft 13 for rotation therewith, comprises a pulley 21 mounted for rotation relative to the fan blades, a rope 24 wound on the pulley, a recoil spring 29 for rewinding the rope on to the pulley, and a pawl 32, pivotally mounted on the pulley and extendable therefrom into abutment with the fan blades to rotatably drive the fan blades in starting the engine. A lever 42 is connected to the pawl in a lost motion connection with respect to the initial rotation of the pulley, the lever being subsequently rotatable with the pulley, and the pawl being retractable upon rope rewind rotation of the pulley. When the engine is running and the fan blades 14 are rotating faster than the starting speed of rotation of the pulley 21, the blade tips 52 will abut an oblique surface of the pawl and cause the pawl to pivot to its retracted position. The pulley has openings 28 therethrough for axial flow of cooling air to the engine. |
