In the present invention there is disclosed the use of alkali metal silicate to improve fabric whiteness and/or fabric safety when bleaching thereof with an aqueous composition having pH value within the range of 9 to 14, said composition comprising from 2 to 10 percent by weight of alkali metal hypochlorite and from 0.02 to 5 percent by weight of an alkali hydroxide functioning as a strong basicity source, wherein all the percentages are based on the composition total weight. Alkali metal silicate reduces yellowing, caused by the alkali metal hypochlorite.
