PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device with high reliability which is made to identify kinds of discharge lamps automatically and appropriately, adequately performs preheating control and lighting control based on the identification results of the discharge lamps, and can be commonly used for a plurality of different discharge lamps. SOLUTION: When shifting in turn from each mode of preheating, starting and lighting in lighting a discharge lamp LA, a filament electric characteristics detecting means FCD which detects difference of electric characteristics of filaments ft1, ft2 of the discharge LA in a period when minute electric current is passed through them by a control circuit CC before the preheating mode, arc after-lighting electric characteristics detecting means LCD which detects electric characteristics after the discharge lamp LA is lit in a starting mode, and a discharge lamp identification means DCM which identifies kinds of discharge lamps LA according to detection results of the both electric characteristics detecting means FCD, LCD are provided, and a control suited for the discharge lamp LA is performed according to the identification result. |
