PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the damping performance of an auto-tensioner without degrading its followability. SOLUTION: A torsion coil spring is inserted between a base 30 and an oscillating arm 24 of an auto-tensioner, and a cylindrical bushing 26 is provided between the base inner circumference 34a and the arm outer circumference 246a. The torsion coil spring presses the arm 24 toward the busing 26, and this pressing direction Z is made to substantially agree with the axial load direction of the force applied to a stepped bolt 40 supporting the oscillating arm 24 from a belt 10. When a belt tension is increased, an arm axis center L4 minutely displaces relative to a base axis center L1 and an extremely large first damping force acts on the oscillating arm 24, so that the damping performance can be improved. When the belt tension is lowered, a smaller second damping force acts on the oscillating arm 24 to upgrade the followability of a pulley 22 to the belt 10.
