[Also in Divisions G4 and H1] Averaging apparatus e.g. for vehicle speeds comprises a logarithmic resistance Fig.1 (not shown) connected across a voltage source over which sliders are traversed by dividend and divisor quantities; a measuring instrument in series with a resistance across the sliders being calibrated in average values. An insulating drum 7, Fig. 3 is notched up on its periphery to locate inter-connecting wire ends 8 of resistors 9 soldered together in series at 10 and graduated in values to constitute a logarithmic chain. Insulating discs 14, 15 rotate on shafts 11, 12 which support drum 7 and are pivoted in bearings 13; the shafts connecting a voltage source to the ends of the resistor chain and the discs carrying peripheral conductor bands 23 engaging sliders connected to a microammeter (not shown). Sliders 3, 4 projecting from the peripheral bands engage as contacts the wire connections 8 and the discs are respectively geared for rotation by electric clock 18 and mileometer drive cable 22, and the meter is calibrated to read average speed directly over a predetermined time. A mileometer indicator (not shown) may be provided enabling the mileage disc to be manually re-adjusted at intervals in correspondence with known mileage covered. A clutch (not shown) may be provided between each disc and its drive, with restoration spring- loading operative on disengagement. The resistance may alternatively be of linear or disc form. |
