PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically control the luminance of a display screen according to various individuals' preferences and to control luminance to be matched with individuals' tastes. SOLUTION: When one out of a first to a fourth functions F1(x)-F4(x) is selectively set to calculate luminance y taking ambient illuminance x as a variable by operating an operation part 3, the luminance y corresponding to the ambient illuminance x is found based on the set function and a backlight 11 is made to emit light with the luminance y. Furthermore, brightness of the display screen of a color liquid crystal panel 12 is stabilized by variation of the luminance y in incremental steps and hysteresis characteristics of the backlight 11.
