[Also in Divisions B4-B5] A machine for cutting a wide strip b 0 , Fig. la, into narrow strips b 1 , b 2 comprises a supply reel D, a cutting mandrel M formed with peripheral grooves S1, S2, S3, Fig. 3, engaged by the blades L 1 , L 2 , L 3 of a blade carrier P, two take-up reels R 1 , R 2 , Fig. la, respectively, and transfer mandrels A, B and C associated with the reels D, R 1 and R 2 respectively. The mandrels are mounted on stirrups 11, 12 and 13 and are urged against the associated reels by counterweights 21, 22 and 23 or by springs. The reels D, R 1 and R 2 are driven through adjustable couplings e.g. magnetic couplers (G 0 , G 1 and G 2 ), Fig. 2 (not shown), to maintain constant tension in the wide and narrow strips. Each take-up reel comprises two reels R 1 , R 1 <SP>1</SP> and R 2 , R 2 <SP>1</SP> and these reels receive the magnetic couplers through friction members F 1 , F<SP>1</SP> 1 , F2 and F 2 <SP>1</SP>. The blades are pivotally mounted on the carrier P so as to be urged either into the grooves for cutting a rigid product, e.g. paper, or out of the grooves for cutting a flexible product e.g. ethylene polyterephthalate.</p> |
