1,251,795. Pipe couplings. PLASTIERS Ltd. 29 Oct., 1968 [30 Oct., 1967; 20 March, 1968], No. 49214/67 and 13548/68. Headings F2B and F2G. A pipe or pipe fitting has a terminal socket section 2 for receiving the spigot end of a pipe in sliding engagement and comprises a body portion having an annular recess formed at the free end thereof, the recess being open ended and having an end face against which an annular non-rollable resilient ring 4 is seated, and a locking ring 6 which retains the sealing ring in the recess. The ring 6 has a surface which closes the end of the recess and abuts the sealing ring, and a part which co-operates with the socket section to maintain the locking ring and pipe or fitting in engagement. As shown a sealing ring 4 of synthetic rubber and having internal and/or external circumferential ribs 19 and corresponding external and/or internal grooves 20 is secured in the recess 3 by a locking ring 6 formed with a skirt 18 and a skirt 10 which seats against a shoulder 8 of the moulded synthetic plastics socket. The ring 6 is fitted over the end of a pipe which is inserted into the socket, a solvent then being applied around the end of the socket and the ring pressed against and bonded to that end; alternatively, fusion welding or an adhesive is employed. For securing the pipe or fitting to a wall, the socket is moulded with integral pads 11 between which and the shoulder 8 a clip 12 is disposed. In a modification, the locking ring has a lip which is snapped over a radially extending lip of the socket, or the ring has a plurality of circumferentially spaced lips and there may be a corresponding number of lips on the socket. |
