1328890 Perforating apparatus EASTMAN KODAK CO 23 Dec 1971 [23 Dec 1970 19 March 1971] 59962/71 Addition to 1328271 Heading B4B Apparatus for perforating sheet material 25, e.g. photographic film, comprises an anvil 32, a punch 27 protruding from or adapted to protrude from the anvil and an ultrasonic vibratable horn 23 so positioned as to force a sheet over the punch, the punch having an end peripheral cutting edge. As shown in Fig. 2, the anvil 32 is cylindrical and is provided with a number of hollow punches 27 normally urged by springs 31 so that their cutting ends are flush with the anvil. As the anvil is rotated a cam 29 moves each punch, in turn, radially outwardly so that as it passes the horn 23 it penetrates the film 25; as the anvil continues to rotate the punch is moved by the cam completely through the film. A finger (37), Fig. 3 (not shown), is provided in order to eject the core from the punch, the cores being collected via a suction device 43. In the modification shown in Fig. 10, the hollow punches 127 are fixed to a rotatable anvil and successively penetrate the film web as they pass by the ultrasonic vibratable horn 123. The punches may be circular, rectangular or other shape. In order to remove the cores from the film a second web 129 of material, e.g. paper is passed in contact with the film. The surface of the film is heated by the ultrasonic vibration effect of the horn so that as the perforations are made in the film the cores are pressed against the paper web and adhere thereto by means of the softened resin on the film; alternatively the contacting surface of the paper web may be coated with thermoplastic resin.
