A method for generating a hierarchical network list involves reading in a plane network list and detecting part circuits which consists of at least one component or network in the plane network list, using associated recognition rules, in which a recognition rule contains a network list of the components connected into the associated part circuit. The components of the detected part circuits are replaced in the plane network list by substitute components, for generating the hierarchical network list.
