An assay on human calgranulins MRP8/MRP14 heterodimer activity, a nucleic acid encoding the heterodimer, or their components in combination, comprises: (a) contacting a cell with the heterodimer, nucleic acid, or components; (b) treating the cell with a test substance; (c) measuring migration of the cell; and (d) comparing the migration with a control cell not treated with the test substance. A functional assay on the activity of human MRP8/MRP14 heterodimer or a nucleic acid encoding the heterodimer, or their individual components in combination, comprises: (a) bringing the human heterodimer or encoding nucleic acid, or their individual components, into contact with a cell; (b) treating the cell with a test substance; (c) measuring migration of the cell; and (d) comparing the migration of the cell with a control cell not treated with the test substance.
