[Also in Division D1] A process for imparting non-uniform dyeability to polyester fibre comprises suspending the fibre in a fluid maintained at a temperature above the fibre melting temperature for a period having a lower limit defined by log 10 T - log 10 T m = -0À688 - 0.588 log 10 t; where T is the heat treatment temperature in ‹ C., T m is the fibre melting temperature in ‹C., and t is the lower limit of the treatment period measured in seconds; and maintaining the fibre tension below 0À03 g./d. to produce a filament whose final degree of crystallinity after heat treatment is at least 40%. The upper limit of the treatment period is preferably defined by log 10 (T - T m ) = 1.576 - 1.085 log 10 t, where T and T m are defined as above and t is the upper limit of the treatment period measured in seconds. The suspension period is preferably from 0À02 seconds to 0À10 seconds. Heat treatment temperature T is preferably at least 100‹ C. higher than the fibre melting temperature T m , and preferably lies in the range 370‹ C. to 1000‹ C. The fibre may be heated by passing it through a flowing, heated gas or by infra-red radiation. The treatment and dyeing of heat-set and non-heat-set polyethylene terephthalate fibre is exemplified. |
