LIQUID CRYSTAL POLYESTER AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal polyester which scarcely by-produces foreign matters in a reactor and has excellent mechanical strength characteristics. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal polyester comprising units represented by the formula (1): OC-R1 -CO-O-R2 -O- (1) (R1 is an aromatic or aliphatic group; R2 is an aliphatic or alicyclic group) and the residual units of an aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid represented by the formula (2): HO-Ar-COOH (2) (Ar is an aromatic group) in their molar ratio of 5/95 to 60/40 is characterized by containing sodium atom and potassium atom in a total amount of <=50 ppm and further containing copper atom and iron atom in a total amount of <=50 ppm.
