PURPOSE: To thin and read a pixel signal by suppressing decrease in space resolution, in an image sensor utilizing a CMOS circuit. CONSTITUTION: The image sensor comprises a pixel array 10, having pixels with each having a photoelectric converter and disposed in a matrix form, pixel selecting circuits 12, 14 each for selecting each pixel, and an A/D converter for A/D-converting the pixel signal selected by the pixel selecting circuit. The pixel selecting circuit selects the pixel of all the row and/or all the columns, selects the pixel signal at each of a plurality of the pixels from the selected pixel signal, and disperses the pixels selected from a pixel block of a plurality of the matrixes in the pixel array in the pixel block. Thus, the pixel selecting circuit for selecting the pixel of the pixel array disperses the selected pixels in the pixel bock of the plurality of the matrixes of the minimum unit of a thinning processing, and hence the decrease in the space resolution can be suppressed.
