A cutting insert (10) having an upper (14) and a lower base face (16); side walls (18) adjoining the faces; at least one cutting edge (22) formed at an intersection of the upper face and a side wall; and at least one cutting corner (20) formed at an intersection of an adjacent pair of side walls. A chip control structure (12) is formed in the upper face (14) extending along the cutting edge (22) from the cutting corner (20) for at least an effective cutting length of the cutting edge. A land surface (26) spaces the chip control structure (12) from the cutting edge (22). The chip control structur e (12) includes multiple radially spaced grooves (36) wherein the grooves of t he chip control structure (12) have a depth generally decreasing from the land (26) toward the center of the insert (10). |
