A method and apparatus for suppressing overload in a telecommunications network, whereby a source node, S, receiving a signal that a call it has directed to a destination node, T, has been rejected, in response, restricts the rate of transmissions of calls it sends to the destination node to a predetermined level for a predetermined time period. If during the time period of restricting the rate of transmissions of calls sent from the source node to the destination node, a further signal indicating that a call directed to the destination node has been rejected, the rate of transmission of calls from the source node to the destination node is restricted further to a further reduced predetermined level for a further predetermined period of time. The telecommunications network could be a UMTS or other third generation (3G) network.
