[Also in Division C3] A chlorinated polyisocyanate composition may be obtained by phosgenating toluene diamine in the presence of a solvent, followed by removal of the solvent and chlorination of the resulting undistilled composition, the chlorinated undistilled toluene polyisocyanate composition having a total chlorine content of 10 to 30 wt. per cent of which at least 60% is substituted in the aromatic ring, a viscosity of 100 to 10,000 centiposes at about 25‹ C. and a corrected amino equivalent of 100 to 150, and containing 30 to 50% by weight based on the weight of the polyisocyanate composition of polymeric materials having molecular weights higher than the M.W. of toluene diisocyanate. In specific examples various polyisocyanate compositions are treated with a stream of chlorine optionally in the presence of ferric chloride as a chlorination catalyst. |
