An open pore foam is used as a packing in liquid and gas chromatography and fractional distillation, and has a substantially uniform porosity at least in planes at right angles to the direction of nett flow of fluid. The foam may comprise a matrix of cured polyester or epoxy resin, cement, plaster of paris, clay, fusible resins; low-melting metals or glasses, slag, polyurethane foams, silicones, ureaformaldehyde resin, melamine formaldehyde resin, phenol or resorcinol formaldehyde foams, P.V.C. The foam may be enclosed in a skin of polyethylene P.V.C., polyamides, polyacetals, polyurethane. The foam may be surface treated with colloidal carbon, active Al 2 O 3 , silica gel, ion exchange resin, (CH 3 ) 3 SiCl, (CH 3 ) 2 SiCl 2 , waterglass. |
