PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium in which high output/high density recording is carried out, and which is excellent in traveling durability such as head abrasion characteristics and head staining. SOLUTION: Such magnetic recording medium is provided that is provided with a magnetic layer containing ferromagnetic powders, a binder and a polishing agent on a nonmagnetic support and is made to have 5% or less number of polishing agent projections of 15 nm or higher among the number of all polishing agent projections per 450μm<2> present on the surface of the magnetic layer, measured by using a atomic force microscope, to 5% or lower.
