PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the problem of high energy cations giving damages to the insulation layer on the surface of the negative electrode, during the time from the time the discharge has started until the spray discharge is maintained and until the voltage drops to a fraction, in the plasma display panel that utilizes the conventional spray discharge or in a gas discharge tube. SOLUTION: In the plasma display panel, which uses a negative electrode 4 having an insulation film or insulating particulate layer on the surface the plasma display panel is equipped with an auxiliary electrode 13 for producing auxiliary discharge between the positive electrode 3, before the discharge is started between the negative electrode 4 and the positive electrode 3.
