In a braiding process, the thread tension is continually monitored and adjusted by a computer-controlled thread sensor and tension regulator (3). The regulation varies in accordance with the braiding process. Also claimed is a commensurate assembly which varies the thread tension in accordance with changes in the cross sectional area of the braiding zone. The braiding machine has a thread (5) supply spool (8), a first tensiometer (3), and a second tensiometer (4) located after the regulator and prior to the braiding contact application. The first tensiometer (3) effectively brakes the thread (5) in accordance with changing target values and the actual value detected by the second tensiometer (4).
