Since cellulose (in particular, crystalline cellulose), which has been commonly employed as fillers in preparations, has an effect of promoting plant growth, compositions containing cellulose together with at least one component selected from among silica gel, diatomaceous earth, alum, calcium carbonate, calcium peroxide and glucose are useful as plant growth promoters. Unhulled rice, beet sugar, turf, mask melon and so on coated with coating compositions for seeds containing the above plant growth promoter compositions show not only an elevated germination ratio but also favorable growth. In cereals such as rice and root vegetables such as beet, an increase in the yield can be expected. By coating disinfected rice seeds with the coating compositions for seeds containing the above plant growth promoter composition, seed presoaking and sprouting can be omitted in the step of pretreatments (selection by specific gravity, disinfection, presoaking and sprouting). Thus, labor can be saved in growing rice seedlings. Furthermore, no waste liquor containing disinfecting agents released from the disinfected seeds is formed in the presoaking, thus achieving an ecological advantage.
