1,179,993. Making bearings; bending; rolling. CLEVITE CORP. 10 June, 1968 [15 June, 1967], No. 27477/68. Headings B3A, B3E and B3M. Apparatus for forming arcuate flanged bearings comprises: a first roller 31 for receiving a longitudinally flanged metal strip 15, the roller having a knurled area 32 and a lip member 35 under which the strip end is positioned, a second roller 30 which engages the outer edges of the strip flanges and at least partly surrounds them, the knurled area gripping the base portion of the strip and feeding the strip between the rollers, and the rollers reducing the flange height uniformly throughout the length of the strip. The strip 15, which is substantially equal in length to the arcuate length of the finished bearing, comprises a steel backing on which is east, clad or sintered bearing material. The necessary oil holes and oil grooves are formed before the strip is bent. A pusher mechanism 33 feeds the strip 15 to the rolls 30, 31 and exerts pressure on the strip to help feed it through the rolls. Back-up rolls 40 maintain the strip in contact with the roll 31 and the roll 30 is retractable to the position shown dotted to receive the strip prior to rolling. During rolling, the strip flanges extend into grooves (41) in the roller 30, Fig. 5 (not shown). A stripper device 50 engages the formed strip 15 and forces it out from underneath the member 35 allowing it to drop out of the roll forming machine after which the rollers reverse back to their original positions. The completed bearing is machined to remove any knurl marks from the bearing surface. |
