PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately and stably inspect edge defects of a plate material during transfer. SOLUTION: The plate material inspecting device is provided with a transfer means 1 for transferring the plate material P in a specific direction, a first inspecting mechanism 221 for performing inspection by irradiating an edge in the transferring direction of the plate material P during transfer with laser light from a fixed location, and a second inspecting mechanism 222 for performing inspection by irradiating an edge which intersects the transferring direction of the transfer-halted plate material P at right angles with laser light while traveling in a direction which intersects the transferring direction of the plate material P at right angles.
