PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for preparing a hydroxy-terminated linear siloxane. SOLUTION: The process for preparing a hydroxy-terminated linear siloxane comprises steps wherein (a) a chlorosiloxane of the formula: ClR2 SiO(R<1> 2 SiO)x SiR2 Cl (wherein x is an integer of 1-10; and R and R<1> are each independently a monovalent hydrocarbon group) is mixed with a volatile methylsiloxane to form a chlorosiloxane solution in a volatile methylsiloxane, (b) the chlorosiloxane solution in a volatile methylsiloxane is hydrolyzed to form a hydrolysate mixture of the reaction products, (c) the hydrolysate mixture of the reaction products is divided into an aqueous phase and a siloxane phase containing a hydroxy-terminated linear siloxane and a volatile methylsiloxane, and (d) the hydroxy-terminated linear siloxane is recovered from the siloxane phase.
