To adjust the scanner (1) a marker pattern (20) is fixed in the region of the web plane. The pattern has a structure that extends at right angles to the direction in which the web moves and that can be detected by a CCD camera (4). A CCD receiving element (6) can be adjusted by a drive (17) relative to a lens (5), at right angles to its optical axis. The drive is connected to a control device that is influenced by signals from the CCD camera. An Independent claim is included for a method of adjusting an optical scanner.
