PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for preventing the overspeed of an internal combustion engine that can prevent the engine from getting into an overspeed state at no-load without causing a secondary adverse effect by the degradation of exhaust gas property, the fouling of exhaust system members and an ignition plug. SOLUTION: When the engine speed N exceeds the set rotating speed Nm, a part of exhaust gas is automatically returned to a combustion chamber 15 from an exhaust system 25 through an intake system 20.
