PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a height-measuring method, capable of provided accurate height data using a simple device. SOLUTION: This instrument is equipped with a camera 14, having an image capturing sensor such as a two-dimensional image sensor or a line sensor, a mounting device 16 enabling the camera 14 to make turning motion through a prescribed angle, and a drive unit 23 for turning the camera 14 on the mounting device 16 through the prescribed angle. A turn angle detector is provided where the positions of images taken with the camera 14, which is horizontally turned through 360 deg. or a preset angle are detected as the number of sensor images starting from a prescribed reference position and the angles of the taken images from the reference position are calculated from the number. The horizontal length of a prescribed physical object is calculated from a turning angle, and the vertical height of the image is subjected to proportional calculation, based on the horizontal length.
