PURPOSE: A network management apparatus and method using an MIB(Management Information Base) name server is provided to search an OID(Object Identifier) of an MIB using a mnemonic or an alias by installing the MIB name server on a network management network. CONSTITUTION: An MIB database(110) stores and manages an OID value for indicating various management information elements and information about mapping relation with a mnemonic or an alias of the OID value. An MIB name server(120) receives an OID inquiry message including the mnemonic or the alias of the OID value, reads an OID value corresponding to the mnemonic or the alias from the MIB database(110), and transmits the read the OID value. If an operator requests a specific instruction about network management, an NMS(Network Management System)(130) transmits an OID inquiry message including a mnemonic or an alias corresponding to the specific instruction to the MIB name server(120). If a specific OID value is received from the MIB name server(120), the NMS(130) composes an SNMP(Simple Network Management Protocol) packet through the specific OID value, transmits the composed SNMP packet to a corresponding network equipment(1), and performs a network management work.
