PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston ring made of steel for an internal combustion engine, which has excellent chipping resistance and can prevent chipping occurring in abutment parts or corner parts. SOLUTION: This piston ring made of the steel has a fundamental structure consisting of a bainitic single phase, or a structure mainly consisting of a bainitic phase, and containing a martensitic phase of <=40% by area ratio. The piston ring preferably has a composition containing 0.5 to 1.0% C, <=1.0% Si, <=2.0% Mn, 1.0 to 20.0% Cr and 0.5 to 2.0% Mo, or further containing 3.0 to 8.0% Ni and/or <=0.5% V.
