PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image processing method that can obtain an accurate and active recognition result and the speediness of processing. SOLUTION: An image corresponding to both a template image and an input image is inputted, the edge normal directional vector of the image is found, and an evaluation vector is generated from the edge normal directional vector; and the evaluation vector is orthogonally converted, product sum calculation for corresponding spectrum data is made as to the respective evaluation vector after the orthogonal conversion obtained as to the respective template image and input image, and reverse orthogonal conversion is performed to generate a map similar values. Then an expression of the similar values, and the orthogonal conversion and reverse orthogonal conversion all have linearity. Pattern recognition can be so performed that components of the similar values are not inverted in sign by luminance variation of the background part.
