PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a box type outer shell muffler having a structure for preventing standing wave occurring in the box type outer shell. SOLUTION: In the box type outer shell, a plurality of expansion chambers are partitioned. This box type outer shell muffler 3 of the engine comprises inner pipes 7a, 7b, and 7c having many small holes communicating with the expansion chambers, an exhaust gas inlet pipe 6, and an exhaust gas outlet pipe 8. A disturbing pipe 9 or a disturbing plate for interfering with the standing wave occurring in the box type outer shell to prevent the standing wave is disposed in parallel with the inner pipes 7a, 7b, and 7c and occurrence of the resonance noise due to the standing wave is suppressed.
