PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily calculate a required axle torque required by an driver from an acceleration opening operated by the driver. SOLUTION: The maximum engine output Pemax and the minimum engine output Pemin possibly generated at a current engine speed Ne are calculated and a difference P between the maximum engine output Pemax and the minimum engine output Pemin is multiplied by a required power index Xacc corresponding to the acceleration opening Ace to find a required power Preq corresponding to the current acceleration opening Ace and the engine speed Ne. Then, the required power Preq is divided by a speed V to find a required driving force Freq and the required driving force Freq is multiplied by a tire radius r to find a required axle torque Treq. The tire radius r can be a fixed value (an initial design value) or it can be learned by calculating an actual axle torque during normal operation and using the actual axle torque and the required axle torque Treq or the required driving force Freq.
